Double Negative
Double Negative, 2023. Plaster moulds of mooncake tin- 30cm x 20cm.Timber plinth - 60cm x 40cm x 40cm
Double Negative consists of two identical plaster moulds cast from a mooncake tin, presented on a timber plinth. The tin is similar to those my family used to store photographs and keepsake - the domestic archives that hold memory and personal history.
Rather than reproducing the original object, the cavity, the negative space left behind is presented. The surface erosion, and residual imprints produced through the casting process echo the ways memory, cultural lineage, and ancestral knowledge are transmitted, partially, imperfectly, and across time.
By foregrounding absence rather than presence, Double Negative reflects on diasporic experiences of home and inheritance. Containers and support structures operate as metaphors for the frameworks that shape migration histories, holding what remains while also marking what has been displaced or lost.
