We Traverse These Remains explores memory, untold histories, and cultural identity, shaped by my experience as a second-generation immigrant living between Australian and Singaporean and contexts. This body of work foregrounds family photo albums, repositioning them as objects of fine art. Family photographs function as forms of cultural currency, shaping relationships and social capital.
This series draws on manipulated photographs of my family and ancestors, which are torn, painted over, collaged, and stitched into. These interventions deliberately degrade the images, echoing the fragmentary nature of memory and cultural inheritance within migrant histories.
Grids and knotted threads recur throughout the work, reflecting a desire to draw connections between past and present. The works incorporate batik imagery central to Singaporean Peranakan craft. Peranakan culture, which fuses Malay, Chinese, and European influences, highlights how trade, migration, colonisation, and slavery in Southeast Asia have shaped local culture. Elements of embroidery reference the complex historical relationship between women and textile labour.
